My rating: 4 of 5 stars
What were the main themes of the book? Survival, death, betrayal and self-preservation (physically and mentally). When you find yourself literally pushed into a corner and find your darkest, deepest secrets brought out in the open, what would you do? Shoot yourself in despair or fight to the end to see who would put you in such a position. For a debut novel, this was a fantastic book which entertains and makes you think.
Describe your favourite scene. When Tommy asks Levi, “and how do you propose we decide who dies?”. This was chilling - to think that it was the child in the situation that raised such a question. It did seem as if the “box” scenario was an escape to Tommy which raised many questions about the incident. If the scum of the earth, like Tommy’s father is placed in a situation like the “box”, is it really all that bad?
What I liked about the book. This is a short book but if you are discussing it with your reading group or book club, you’re going to take awhile. Each chapter and situation raises more than question about ethics, emotions and morality. If you have the time, jot down how you feel at every chapter, don’t edit or change these thoughts until you get to the end and see what happens. You’ll be amazed at what you find out about yourself.
