My rating: 4 of 5 stars
The Photo Traveler is a unique read which combines elements of Goodnight Sweetheart and One Hour Photo. You have the time travel theme which the author executes very well and a slightly sinister edge that grounds this story emotionally.
On the surface, Gavin's ability to look at a photo and then experience the events is akin to the recollection mechanism we all have. Photos are memories. When we look at a photo, we mentally travel back. Sometimes, we catch ourselves thinking about what was and what could have happened.
Gavin on the other hand is able to physically do this. The theme of death hangs heavy in the book. It appears to define a lot of Gavin's thoughts, reactions and how he perceives life. It sometimes felt that Gavin's travels were an escape mechanism for him to deal with the death of his parents which I was half expecting as the ending.
Is this book worth your time? Absolutely. Is it well-written? There were some minor errors but nothing that made the story any less meaningful. Why the 4 stars? You'll have to be prepared for a cliffhanger ending. This is not a favourite for many of us at the book club and other readers I know but we are also starting to notice that it seems to be a new trend we'll need to get used to.
