What is your favorite quote, by whom, and why? It’s a tossup between two old proverbs. One is Chinese: Not the fastest horse can catch a word said in anger. The other is Norwegian: There is no bad weather, only bad clothing. I don’t know who said them first, but they are two profound rules for living your life.
What is your favorite color? Cobalt blue.
What is your favorite food? Anything Italian.
How long have you been writing? Since I can remember. My first short story was a mystery I wrote when I was seven, but I don’t remember myself any younger, so that’s the best I can do.
What genre are you most comfortable writing? Nonfiction. Journalism and personal essay.
Have you developed a specific writing style? Yes. I try to never use more words than necessary.
What is your greatest strength as a writer? My ability to see universality. We all like to think we’re different, and that’s what makes us all exactly the same.
Have you ever had writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it? No. Writer’s block doesn’t exist. You’re not blocked, you’re just not writing stuff you like. Keep writing, the good stuff will come.
