Author Interview – Deborah Jensen

6:30 AM Posted by James Noel , No comments

Do you intend to make writing a career? Writing as my sole career would be my ultimate goal. As of now I will do my writing on my “off’ time. However, since my children are grown and we have downsized our life, I do have more time now than ever before to write.
How did you come up with the title? “Beyond Escape” was not the original title. When I started the novel, the title was “Past and Present.” When I got to the stage of editing, I had a meeting with my editor and she asked me about the title. After I replied she considered my answered then advised me the title was not gripping enough. She challenged me to think it over and come up with something that would catch the reader’s attention.  I thought about the first chapter and how the story unfolded. Kim, my main character needed to escape from her current life. What Kim experienced and uncovered throughout the novel was so much more than an escape, it was beyond an escape.
Who designed the cover? The cover was designed by Ryan Scheife of May Fly Design. He and I came up with a design that came from my inspiration. We worked through some edits and when we got the final design done, it was delivered to my editor.  It was awhile before she made any comments on the finished product. Finally, at one of our meetings she discussed how I should rethink the cover design. She felt it didn’t fit the feel of the book.  After careful consideration, the three of us came up with the current cover which depicts the Mexican home featured in the last chapters of the book. Ironically, the final cover was one we had contemplated right from the start.
